In industrial processes, bio coal can take the place of fossil coal as a carbon-neutral fuel. It is created by the Biogreen process, which involves carbonizing raw biomass under controlled temperature and residence time conditions. The removal of volatile organic molecules and cellulose from the feedstock during the thermal conversion of biomass, which is carried out in an oxygen-free environment, enables the production of a homogenous, solid biofuel with properties resembling those of fossil coal.
The use of such fuels is becoming more and more popular in carbon-intensive industries, and the opening of new Biogreen production facilities devoted to the production of bio-coal marks the beginning of a new age in the use of fossil-free solid fuels.
The character of the bio-coal differs greatly from that of the ordinary standard wood pellets or briquets, in contrast to the raw biomass. It has a larger energy density, a lot of carbon, and hydrophobic characteristics, and it is very resistant to biological deterioration. Because of this, bio-coal can provide a sustainable and fossil-free alternative for sectors like metallurgy, where it is typically impossible to use raw biomass as a reducing agent in a blast furnace due to the biomass's high moisture content, low fixed carbon content, and high contents of volatile matter and oxygen.
